The Science, In Plain English

What Actually Makes Mad Honey Different

Mad honey isn't a marketing name — it describes a real, well-documented characteristic of honey produced in specific high-altitude regions of Nepal and Turkey. When Apis dorsata laboriosa bees forage almost exclusively on wild rhododendron blossom, the nectar they collect carries naturally occurring compounds called grayanotoxins. These same compounds are found in the rhododendron and azalea shrubs that grow in gardens right across Sydney, though the concentration in ordinary garden nectar is far too low to matter.

At altitude in the Annapurna range, where rhododendron grows wild and undiluted by other flowering plants, the resulting honey carries a meaningfully higher concentration. That's the entire reason this product exists as its own category, separate from the wildflower and eucalypt honey found on Sydney supermarket shelves — and it's also why dosage, sourcing, and batch testing matter far more here than they would with a jar of ordinary honey.

We don't make health claims about what mad honey does or doesn't do for any individual — everyone responds differently, and grayanotoxin content varies naturally between harvests. What we can control, and what we do control, is transparency: every batch is tested by an independent lab before it ships, and that report is available to any customer who asks for it.

Quick Facts

  • Active compound: naturally occurring grayanotoxin
  • Source plant: wild rhododendron (Rhododendron species)
  • Producing bee: Apis dorsata laboriosa
  • Harvest region: Lamjung district, Annapurna range, Nepal
  • Harvest season: spring and autumn only
  • Verification: independent lab report per batch

Sydney Honey vs Himalayan Mad Honey

Sydney has no shortage of excellent local honey — Southern Highlands wildflower, Blue Mountains ironbark, and backyard hives from the Hills District all produce genuinely good jars. If you've been comparing those to mad honey, it's worth being clear about what you're actually comparing, since the two products aren't interchangeable and aren't trying to be.

One is a farmed, everyday table honey. The other is a rare, seasonal wild harvest with a specific compound profile that most Sydneysiders have never encountered in a jar before. Neither is "better" in a general sense — they simply serve different purposes.

Local Sydney & NSW Honey

  • Sourced from eucalypt and wildflower blossom
  • Produced by farmed European honeybee hives
  • Mild, familiar flavour profile
  • Available year-round from local apiaries

Original Mad Honey (Nepal)

  • Sourced from wild rhododendron nectar at 2,500m+
  • Produced by wild Apis dorsata laboriosa colonies
  • Bold, bitter-sweet flavour with a numbing finish
  • Strictly seasonal — spring and autumn harvests only
Getting Started

First Time Trying Mad Honey In Sydney?

Mad honey is not something to approach the way you'd approach a jar from the supermarket. Potency naturally varies between harvests, since it's a wild, unblended product rather than a standardised one — so the right approach for a first-time Sydney buyer is to start well below what you think you need, and give your body time to respond before taking any more.

1

Start with half a teaspoon on an empty stomach

2

Wait 45–60 minutes before deciding whether to have more

3

Skip the alcohol on the same evening you try it

4

Not suitable for pregnant women or anyone with a heart condition

Important Health & Safety Information

Mad honey contains naturally occurring grayanotoxins and is intended for adult use only. It is not suitable for anyone under 18, for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for people with heart conditions, low blood pressure, or other cardiovascular concerns. It should never be combined with alcohol, sedatives, or blood pressure medication.

This product has not been evaluated by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and is sold as a natural food product, not as a therapeutic, medicinal, or supplement item. No claims are made about its ability to treat, cure, or prevent any illness or condition. Effects vary from person to person and between harvest batches.

If you have any pre-existing medical condition, are taking prescription medication, or are unsure whether mad honey is appropriate for you, speak with your GP or a qualified healthcare professional before trying it. If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, an irregular heartbeat, or difficulty breathing after consuming mad honey, stop immediately and seek medical attention, or call the Australian Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

FAQs

Still Have Questions?

Can you deliver mad honey to Sydney?

Yes. We ship direct from Kathmandu to Sydney and surrounding NSW suburbs, with full export documentation and a lab report attached to every batch. Each parcel is packed in discreet, plain packaging and handled the same way regardless of order size.

How long does delivery to Sydney take?

Orders typically arrive in Sydney within 10–16 business days of dispatch from Kathmandu, with tracking provided the moment your parcel ships. Occasional delays can happen at the customs stage, which is outside our control, but we'll keep you updated if that happens.

Do you deliver to all Sydney suburbs and postcodes?

Yes — we deliver to all Sydney postcodes, including the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, North Shore, and Greater Western Sydney, using the same tracked international courier service for every order regardless of suburb.

Is this the same as honey from the Blue Mountains?

No. Blue Mountains and NSW native honey comes from eucalypt and wildflower sources in farmed hives, and is a mild everyday table honey. Ours is a wild seasonal harvest from Nepal's Annapurna range, with naturally occurring grayanotoxin that local honey doesn't have — the two aren't interchangeable.

How do I know my jar is genuine?

Every jar carries a batch number and QR code linking to that batch's independent lab report, which confirms grayanotoxin concentration and purity. You're welcome to request the report before you order if you'd like to see it first.

What if I'm not happy with my order?

Every Sydney order is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If your jar doesn't match what we describe, or arrives damaged, get in touch and we'll sort it out — a replacement or a refund, whichever you'd prefer.
