If you live in Bahrain and drive into Saudi Arabia, remember that Saudi customs applies its own food rules at the causeway. Order to the address where you will use it. For Saudi delivery, see our mad honey in Saudi Arabia page.
In Bahrain, many people call dibs, the dark syrup pressed from dates, date honey, and pour it generously. Mad honey looks similar in the jar but is something else entirely: real honey made by wild giant bees from Himalayan rhododendron, that contains grayanotoxin, so you take it a quarter teaspoon at a time.
We know of no Bahraini law that bans mad honey. Grayanotoxin is not a listed narcotic, and honey enters Bahrain as a food that customs and the food safety authorities may inspect. We sell only to adults 18 and over, and if customs refuses a parcel, we refund you. The numbers for every batch are on our lab report page, and our legal guide covers other countries.
Start with ¼ teaspoon after a light meal and wait at least 2 hours; never more than ½ teaspoon a day; no driving afterwards. Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, or with a heart or blood-pressure condition or medication. If you feel unwell, call 999. Read the dosage guide.
After a quarter teaspoon, most people notice a slow warmth in the chest and cheeks within 30 to 90 minutes, then loose shoulders and a soft, light head. A tingle on the lips is common. The effect fades over a few hours. Keep it for a quiet evening at home after a light meal, not before a drive across the causeway, a day on a boat or a workout in the heat. If nothing happens after two hours, take no more that day and try half a teaspoon next time.
Bahrain built its history on pearling. For centuries divers from Muharraq dropped to the seabed on a single breath, with a rope to the boat and a clip on the nose, to bring up oyster shells, and the Pearling Path in Muharraq is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nepal's Gurung honey hunters show the same kind of courage on land. They climb down sheer cliffs in Lamjung on bamboo-and-rope ladders, with a long pole and a basket, to cut the combs of the wild Himalayan giant honey bee while smoke drifts up from below. Like pearling, the harvest is seasonal, dangerous and passed from father to son. Read the story of the Gurung honey hunters.
Bahrain's summers are hot and humid, and for honey the humidity is the bigger risk. Honey draws water from the air, so a jar left open in a humid kitchen can thin at the top and, over time, start to ferment. Close the lid tightly after every serving, use a clean, dry spoon, and keep the jar in an air-conditioned cupboard away from the sun and the stove. It does not need the fridge. Sealed and stored this way, mad honey keeps for years. If it crystallises in a cool flat, stand the closed jar in warm water below 40 °C until it softens.
In Bahrain many small food sellers trade on Instagram and WhatsApp, and mad honey is no exception. Some sellers are honest; many cannot show where their honey comes from. Before you transfer money to anyone, ask for four things: a batch number on the jar and a lab report with the same number; the harvest district and season; a photo that shows the honey's colour, which should be dark amber to red; and a price that matches hand-cut cliff honey. If a seller cannot answer, walk away. Our guide shows how to tell real mad honey from fake.

In small amounts most healthy adults tolerate it well. Medical reports link poisoning to about one or two tablespoons, so keep to a quarter teaspoon and avoid it with a heart or blood-pressure condition.
Thick and less sweet than Sidr or date syrup, with an herbal note and a bitter, warming finish.
We have not seen lab-tested Nepal mad honey in Bahrain's souqs or pharmacies. Buy only where you can see a lab report for your batch.
