Honey Benefits for Men: What Research Supports and What It Does Not

Table of Contents

Honey benefits for men are real but modest. The best human evidence shows that honey can lower fasting blood sugar and cholesterol when it replaces other sugar, and that it fuels exercise about as well as a dextrose gel. Claims that honey raises testosterone, improves sperm or fixes erections have no solid human trials behind them, and honey packs sold for those goals have contained hidden prescription drugs.

This guide sorts each claim into supported, unproven or unsafe, names the study behind every verdict, and shows how much honey fits inside a man’s daily added sugar limit. Original Mad Honey sells wild harvested honey from Nepal, so we have a commercial interest in honey. Every health statement below traces to a journal, a university, a hospital, a regulator or a health agency.

What is in a spoonful of honey, and is honey good for you

One tablespoon of honey (20 grams) has about 61 calories and 16.5 grams of carbohydrate, with no meaningful vitamins or minerals at that serving (Healthline, citing USDA data). Honey is a sugar first and a health food second. Raw honey also carries plant compounds called flavonoids and phenolic acids, which act as antioxidants in lab tests. Lab activity is not proof of a health effect in men.

The daily limit puts that in context. The American Heart Association says men should have no more than 9 teaspoons, or 36 grams, of added sugar a day, and its list of added sugars includes honey (American Heart Association). One tablespoon of honey uses close to half of that allowance.

So, is honey good for you? A little, under the right conditions. The benefits of honey come mostly from using it as a swap for table sugar, not from eating an extra serving of sugar on top of your diet. It is not a supplement, and it does not replace the foods that actually protect a man’s heart and blood sugar.

Honey benefits for men that have human evidence

Blood sugar and cholesterol

A 2022 review in Nutrition Reviews pooled 18 controlled trials with 1,105 participants. Honey lowered fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and it raised HDL cholesterol. The typical trial gave about 40 grams a day, close to two tablespoons, for a median of eight weeks. Raw honey drove many of the effects, and pasteurized honey appeared to lose most of them (University of Toronto).

Read the result with its limits. Most trials had low certainty. The effect appeared in people who ate healthy diets with added sugar at 10 percent of calories or less. The researchers framed honey as a swap for other sugar and not as an addition, and one author said people who currently avoid sugar should not start eating honey. We did not find a separate result for men in the summaries we read.

Energy and workouts

Honey works as exercise fuel because it is carbohydrate. In a small 2005 trial, nine trained male cyclists rode three 64 kilometer time trials and took 15 grams of a placebo gel, a dextrose gel or a honey gel before the ride and every 16 kilometers. Average power was 164 watts on placebo, 175 on dextrose and 174 on honey. Finish time was 131.3 minutes on placebo, 128.3 on dextrose and 128.8 on honey. Honey and dextrose did not differ (Effects of honey supplementation on glucose, insulin, and endurance cycling performance).

That makes honey a practical carbohydrate for a long ride or run, not a better one. Nine riders is a small sample, and the result applies to long endurance effort. A short gym session does not call for extra sugar.

Blood pressure

Honey and blood pressure is the claim where male specific data exists, and it is not encouraging. A 2020 study in Clinical and Experimental Hypertension surveyed 4,561 adults aged 40 and older in China. Women who ate honey up to six times a week had lower odds of prehypertension. The study found no significant link in men. A survey of this type cannot prove cause, so it does not show that honey lowers blood pressure in anyone (Clinical and Experimental Hypertension, 2020).

Honey claims for men that lack human evidence

Most pages on this topic put these claims first. They belong here because the proof is missing.

Testosterone

We found no human trial that tested ordinary honey on testosterone. Studies in rats have reported changes in the hormone, and animal results often fail to carry over to people. Until a trial in men exists, the claim that honey raises testosterone is a guess.

Sperm and fertility

The closest study is a 2014 trial in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. It randomized 66 men with low sperm counts to 20 grams of Tualang honey, a Malaysian honey, or to a herbal supplement called Tribestan for 12 weeks. The trial had no placebo group, so it cannot show that honey itself improved anything, and Tualang honey is not the honey most kitchens hold (Ismail et al., 2014). One small trial of a different honey does not support a fertility claim.

Erections and stamina

We found no trial showing that ordinary honey improves erections, libido or time in bed. A man who has trouble with erections should see a doctor, because in younger men the cause can be early heart disease, low testosterone or stress. Honey is not a treatment for any of them.

Prostate

We found no human trial that tested honey for prostate health. A Prostate Protection heading on a honey page is marketing, not a finding.

Mood and mental health

Mental health is a topic men search often, and honey gets pulled into it. A 2022 review in Molecules described stingless bee honey as a promising candidate for depression, mainly because of its antioxidant content. A candidate is a hypothesis, not a treatment. We found no completed human trial showing that any honey treats depression or anxiety, so a man who struggles with his mood should see a doctor and not rely on honey.

Honey packs sold to men can hide prescription drugs

This is the most useful warning on the page. In April 2022 the FDA tested ETUMAX VIP Royal Honey for Him and found sildenafil and tadalafil, the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis, which the label did not list. The agency warned that these drugs may interact with nitrates, such as nitroglycerin, and lower blood pressure to dangerous levels (FDA).

A 2025 warning from Hartford HealthCare repeats the point. Dr. Jared Bieniek, a men’s health specialist, said the effects of over the counter honey packs sold for sexual performance, including Royal Honey VIP, are attributed to undisclosed tadalafil. Accidental overdose can cause headaches, vision changes and prolonged erections, and men with high blood pressure or liver or kidney disease face added risk (Hartford HealthCare). These packs are not the same product as the honey in your pantry. If a honey promises sexual results, treat it as a drug and not as food.

Is one spoon of honey a day good for men

No trial defines the best daily amount. The review that found lower blood sugar used about 40 grams a day, close to two tablespoons, and it worked as a swap for other sugar. Two tablespoons carry roughly 33 grams of carbohydrate, nearly all of the 36 gram daily added sugar limit for men before a soda, a sauce or a dessert.

A sensible habit is to count honey inside that limit. Use a teaspoon or a tablespoon in place of the sugar in coffee, oats or yogurt, and skip the extra spoon on top. Honey is useful when it replaces something, not when it joins everything else you eat. The 1 spoon of honey a day benefits that trials measured apply only when honey takes the place of other sugar.

Raw, manuka and cinnamon honey: does the type matter

Raw honey benefits for men are the best supported of any type, but the support is still thin. In the blood sugar review, raw honey drove many of the improvements and pasteurized honey appeared to lose most of them. If you choose honey for its health profile, pick raw or minimally processed honey.

Manuka honey benefits for men are a different story. People often ask what the benefits of manuka honey for men are, and the honest answer is that we found no trial of manuka honey in men. The pages that promote it lean on research about honey in general. Cinnamon and honey is a popular pairing, and we found no trial that tested it in men either. Treat both as taste and price choices, not as health upgrades.

Who should be careful with honey

  • Men with diabetes or prediabetes. Honey is still about 80 percent sugar, and it counts as added sugar. Ask your doctor how it fits your plan before you use it daily.
  • Men who take nitrates or have heart disease. Never use a honey pack for performance. The FDA warning above explains why.
  • Households with babies. Do not give honey to a child younger than 1 year, because it can carry the bacteria that cause infant botulism (CDC).

Where mad honey fits for men

Mad honey is not a stronger version of the honey above. It comes from rhododendron nectar and carries grayanotoxin, a compound that slows the heart and lowers blood pressure. A 2018 review in RSC Advances found a slow heart rate and low blood pressure in about 90 percent of reported poisoning cases. No trial supports mad honey for testosterone, fertility or performance, and the same effects that men hope for can turn into a medical emergency.

Two cases show the range. In Nepal, a 60 year old man who took blood pressure medicine and ate mad honey with alcohol reached a heart rate of 40 beats per minute (The Himalayan Times, 2026). In Utah, a 50 year old woman who ate mad honey reached the emergency room with a blood pressure of 90 over 60 and was treated with fluids and atropine (Utah Poison Control Center). Our guide to the effects of mad honey explains the timeline and the warning signs, and the comparison of honey and mad honey shows how the two differ. Men with heart conditions, low blood pressure or blood pressure medicine should skip mad honey.

How to choose a honey you can trust

  1. Read the label for a source. A trustworthy jar names the region and the harvest, not just the word pure.
  2. Prefer raw or minimally processed honey. Heat treatment is what removed the benefits in the review.
  3. Ask for a batch lab report. A seller that tests its honey can show the lab, the date and the result.
  4. Be suspicious of price and promises. Honey adulterated with syrup is common even though it is illegal in the United States, and a jar that promises sexual results is a drug risk, not a honey.

Honey benefits for men: frequently asked questions

Is honey good for you?

In small amounts, and mainly as a swap for other sugar. A 2022 review of 18 trials found lower fasting blood sugar and cholesterol with honey, but most of the evidence had low certainty. Honey is still about 80 percent sugar, so it does not make an unhealthy diet healthy.

What are the benefits of honey for men?

The supported benefits are small. Honey can lower fasting blood sugar and cholesterol when it replaces other sugar, and it fuels long exercise about as well as a dextrose gel. Claims about testosterone, sperm, erections and the prostate have no solid human trials.

Does honey increase testosterone?

We found no human trial showing that honey raises testosterone. Rat studies exist, but they do not prove the same effect in men.

Is honey good for male fertility?

Not proven. One small trial gave 20 grams of Tualang honey to 66 men with low sperm counts and compared it with a herbal supplement, with no placebo group. It cannot show that honey improves fertility.

Is one spoon of honey a day good for men?

One spoon is a reasonable amount if it replaces other sugar. A tablespoon holds about 16.5 grams of carbohydrate, and the American Heart Association limit for men is 36 grams of added sugar a day, so count honey inside that limit.

What are the benefits of raw honey for men?

In a 2022 review of 18 trials, raw honey drove many of the improvements in blood sugar and cholesterol, while pasteurized honey appeared to lose most of them. The certainty of the evidence was low.

What are the benefits of manuka honey for men?

We found no trial of manuka honey in men, so its benefits for men are unproven. Its price is not backed by male specific evidence.

Is Royal Honey VIP safe for men?

The FDA found sildenafil and tadalafil, which the label did not list, in a honey pack sold as Royal Honey for Him. Those drugs can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels in men who take nitrates. Avoid honey packs sold for sexual performance.

Is mad honey good for men?

No trial supports it for men’s health. Mad honey carries grayanotoxin, which slows the heart and lowers blood pressure, and men with heart conditions or blood pressure medicine should avoid it.
