Most mad honey sellers ranking in Australia price in US dollars or euros, and several don’t mention Australia at all. We built this page for Australian buyers because Australia has some of the strictest food import rules in the world, and you deserve to know exactly what you’re ordering before you pay.

Four things we don’t compromise on, explained properly — not just badges.
We source from cliff-harvesting communities in Lamjung, Nepal, not from resellers. Every jar shows its harvest season and batch number.
No comb pieces, no wax, no additives. That matters here, because Australian biosecurity rules focus on whether honey is pure (more on that below).
LAB tested every batch for grayanotoxin, rhododendron pollen, moisture and added sugars.
Every parcel is declared as honey from Nepal, with accurate contents and value. We never relabel mad honey as "regular" honey to get it through customs.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) checks every international mail item that arrives in Australia. Under the biosecurity determination we reviewed, honey can come in without an import permit if it is “pure and free from extraneous material” (Biosecurity Determination 2021, s22).
So we pack for that standard:
Strained, pure honey only, with no comb, pollen pellets or propolis added.
Sealed, labelled jars showing the product name, country of origin and batch number.
Clear customs paperwork, listi[ng] the item as honey, its origin an[d] real value, as Australia Post requires for all food (Australi[a] Post)
Both contain grayanotoxins, and both vary in strength by batch. If it’s the traditional Himalayan honey you’re after, check that the jar names Nepal as its origin and comes with a lab result.

If this is your first time, choose the smallest jar. A serving is half a teaspoon, so even a small jar lasts for weeks of occasional use, and you’ll learn how your body responds before committing to more. Regular customers usually move up to the mid-size jar, which brings the price per gram down. The largest jar suits households who share it, or anyone who wants a season’s supply from a single harvest, all matched to one lab report. Whatever size you choose, every jar comes from the same tested batch system and carries the same serving guide.

Honey is naturally long-lasting, but Australian summers can be tough on any food. Keep your jar sealed, in a cupboard away from direct sun, and out of a hot car or letterbox. You don’t need to refrigerate it. If it crystallises in a Melbourne or Hobart winter, stand the jar in warm (not boiling) water for a few minutes. In Queensland or the Top End, store it somewhere cool and dry. Most importantly, keep it well away from children: it looks like ordinary honey, but it isn’t.
Australian food law doesn’t name mad honey specifically, and we’re not aware of any federal or state ban on it. It is regulated like other imported honey: it must be pure, safe and honestly declared. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has acknowledged that grayanotoxin from rhododendron honey can cause poisoning (FSANZ), which is why testing and clear labelling matter. We sell to adults 18 and over only. Rules can change, so if you’re unsure, check with DAFF before ordering.
If anyone feels unwell after eating mad honey, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from anywhere in Australia (Department of Health). Call 000 for chest pain, fainting or a very slow heartbeat.
Mad honey is made by the Himalayan giant honey bee from rhododendron nectar in Nepal’s hills. The nectar carries grayanotoxins, which give the honey its bitter taste and, in small amounts, a relaxed and light-headed feeling. Gurung honey hunters have harvested it from cliffs for generations, twice a year, using rope ladders and smoke.
Australians and New Zealanders may already know about toxic honey from tutin, a different toxin linked to the tutu plant, which FSANZ limits to 0.7 mg/kg in honey. Mad honey’s effect comes from a different compound, grayanotoxin, and from a different plant. Read more about Nepal mad honey and the rhododendron plant.
