Mad honey is sold in the US as a food. Grayanotoxin, the compound that gives it its effect, is not on the DEA's list of controlled substances (DEA list). The FDA describes grayanotoxin as a natural toxin found in some honey and says mad honey poisoning "is rare" (FDA).
Because it's a food, the normal food rules apply: it must be safe, honestly labelled and imported with FDA Prior Notice. Mad honey is a dark, reddish honey made by the Himalayan giant honey bee from the nectar of rhododendron flowers in Nepal's hills. Rhododendron nectar contains grayanotoxins, which give the honey its bitter taste and its relaxing, light-headed effect in small amounts.
