Mad honey is sold in the US as a food. Grayanotoxin, the compound that gives it its effect, is not on the DEA's list of controlled substances, and the FDA treats it as a natural toxin that can occur in honey, not as a drug. Like any imported food, it must be safe, honestly labelled and entered with FDA Prior Notice, which we file for every parcel.
We are not aware of any state that bans mad honey, including Texas, California, Florida and New York. Laws change, so check your local rules if you are unsure. We sell to adults 18 and over only.
Mad honey is a dark, reddish honey made by the Himalayan giant honey bee from the nectar of rhododendron flowers in Nepal's hills. The nectar contains grayanotoxin, which gives the honey its bitter finish and, in small amounts, a relaxed, light-headed feeling. Gurung honey hunters have harvested it from cliff-face combs for generations, twice a year, and the spring harvest is usually the strongest.
It is not a substitute for the honey in a US grocery store: you take a quarter teaspoon, not a spoonful. Learn more about what mad honey is.
Take ¼ teaspoon after a light meal and wait at least 2 hours. Never take more than ½ teaspoon in a day.
Medical reports link poisoning to about 15 to 30 g, one to two tablespoons (RSC Advances, 2018), and Utah Poison Control notes significant effects after "a tablespoon or less". In larger amounts mad honey can cause dizziness, nausea, sweating, a slow heartbeat, low blood pressure and fainting.
Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, has a heart condition, low blood pressure or a slow heart rate, or takes heart or blood-pressure medication.
