Mexicans search for this honey as miel loca, miel de rododendro or simply mad honey, and some sellers call it "miel alucinógena". That last name is wrong. Mad honey does not cause visions. In a small amount it brings warmth and a light, relaxed head; in a large amount it causes dizziness, vomiting and low blood pressure. Our jar comes from the Himalayan side of the story, a dark red spring honey often called Himalayan red honey.
Mexico has one of the oldest beekeeping traditions in the world. The Maya kept the stingless bee Melipona beecheii, xunan kab, in hollow logs long before European bees arrived, and Yucatán still exports some of the finest honey in the Americas.
| Honey | Bee | Where | Character | Serving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melipona (xunan kab) | Stingless Maya bee | Yucatán Peninsula | Thin, sour-sweet, prized as a remedy | By the spoon or drop |
| Yucatán honey | Hive honey bees | Yucatán, Campeche | Light, floral | By the spoon |
| Mad honey (miel loca) | Wild Himalayan giant honey bee | Rhododendron cliffs, Nepal | Dark red, bitter finish, warm tingle | ¼ teaspoon |
Both Melipona honey and mad honey come from bees that people respect and do not tame easily, but only mad honey carries grayanotoxin, which is why it needs a lab report and a tiny serving.
We dispatch from Kathmandu within 1–3 business days. Mexico takes longer than the US because customs inspects many food parcels; your tracking shows every step.
We know of no Mexican law that bans mad honey. Grayanotoxin does not appear on Mexico's controlled-substance schedules, and honey enters as a food under COFEPRIS rules, which may apply to food parcels. We sell only to adults 18 and over, and we refund you in full if customs refuses your parcel, under our refund policy. Our legal guide covers other countries.
Our dosage guide explains each step.
Search miel loca on Mercado Libre or Facebook Marketplace and you may find jars from unknown sellers, often without a lab report, a batch number or even a country of origin. Some are ordinary honey; some may be far stronger than the seller knows. Before you pay, check four things: a batch number on the jar that matches a published lab report; a named harvest district and season; a dark amber-to-red colour with a bitter finish, very different from thin Melipona honey; and a price that fits hand-cut cliff honey. Our guide shows how to tell real mad honey from fake.
Mexico tests honey in different ways from region to region. A Monterrey or Mérida summer can push a kitchen past 35 °C, which darkens honey and dulls its flavour, so keep the jar in the coolest cupboard you have, away from the stove, the window and the sun. In Mexico City's rainy season, humidity is the bigger risk: honey draws water from damp air, so close the lid tightly after every serving and use a dry spoon. It does not need the fridge, and sealed this way it keeps for years.
Gurung hunters in Lamjung cut comb twice a year. The spring harvest, in April and May, comes while rhododendrons bloom on the Annapurna slopes; that honey is darker, more bitter and usually stronger. The autumn harvest falls in October and November, the weeks when Mexican families set out their ofrendas for Día de Muertos, and it carries mixed mountain nectar, so it tastes milder. We print the season and batch number on every jar, and the lab report records the grayanotoxin we measured. Whichever you choose, start with a quarter teaspoon, and keep it off the ofrenda and out of the pan de muerto. Meet the Gurung honey hunters who cut it.
